- Me, lecturing: So we see how in The Merchant of Venice money gets turned into love all over the place. In act one, scene one, the very first mention of debt is as a corollary to love, when Antonio tells Bassanio, "my *purse*, my *person*, my extremest means lie all unlocked to your occasion." He is his purse, and he's giving it to Bassanio.
- Student 1: Wait, wasn't "purse," like, slang?
- Me: Sexual slang, yes.
- Student 2: For what?
- Me: ...where a man keeps his precious bits.
- Students: ?
- Me: *Sigh.* Family jewels, so to speak.
- Student 1: Wait, what?
- Me: Oh, for god's sake, SCROTUM.
- Student 2: No.
- Me: Yes.
- Students: *hilarity*
- Me: Yeah, right, Shakespeare you so nasty. Can I move on?
- Me: Later, at line 181, Antonio goes on to reiterate this pledge of love when he says, "My credit shall be..."
- Me: ...
- Me: Shit.
- Me: "My credit shall be racked even to the uttermost."
- Students: *hilarity*
- Me: Oh, stop.
- Me: Bassanio continues to speak of Portia in monetary terms when he says that her suitors are "many Jasons come in quest of her," like...
- Me: Christ.
- Me: *sigh*
- Me: Like a golden fleece.
- Students: *hilarity*
- Student 1: So Portia's blond?
- Student 2: Yep. And the carpet matches the drapes.
- Me: This class is OVER.
